Vitamin E was discovered in 1922. Initially found to aid in animal offspring its name “tocopherol” comes from the Greek word tokos meaning childbirth and phero meaning to bring forth. It was slow to be used at first because scientists failed to find an adequate source of the vitamin. But by 1936 it was discovered that wheat germ oil is abundant in Vitamin E and its use since then has been remarkable.
Vitamin E is an essential, fat-soluble nutrient that functions as an antioxidant in the human body. It is obtained by the vacuum distillation of edible oils, rendered animal fats, or a combination of such fats with vegetable oils.
Knowing the nutritional advantage of the oil and the fact that the human body cannot manufacture its own Vitamin E, doctors recommend that Vitamin E supplements and/or food rich in Vitamin E be part of a recommended diet.
When using Vitamin E, choose only 100% natural d-alpha tocopherol (all other forms are synthetic). The natural form of Vitamin E is found mainly in vegetable oils and is believed to protect body fat and tissues from breakdown and to slow down the aging process.
Vitamin E acts as a natural preservative when added to other oils or cosmetics. It prevents rancidity and aids in the prevention of scar tissue resulting from burns, cuts and sores. It is considered excellent for all skin types. Vitamin E plays a crucial role in protecting skin cells and membranes from environmental damage. This protection extends to stopping damage to the skin from UV rays, pollutants and aging. It is a deep moisturizer for the skin yet allows the skin to breathe and function naturally; therefore helping to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
- Rub Vitamin E around eyes to sooth inflamed eye tissue and moisturize and protect the delicate skin around the eyes.
- Choose natural beauty care products which utilize Vitamin E’s natural preservative qualities. The benefit of products using Vitamin E is two-fold: naturally preventing rancidity and thoroughly moisturizing skin.
