Evidence suggests that sunflowers were cultivated by Indians in present-day Arizona and New Mexico about 3000 BC. Some archaeologists believe that the sunflower may have been domesticated before corn. The natives, following ancient cultivation practices, chose the largest seeds from the biggest heads year after year, developing the largest sunflowers that, in turn, produced the largest seeds.
Sunflowers were used in many ways throughout the various Indian tribes. While many applications were in culinary use, there are many early references of squeezing the oil from the seed and using it in bread making as well as on the skin and hair.
This exotic North American plant was taken to Europe by Spanish explorers sometime around 1500. The plant became widespread throughout present-day Western Europe mainly as an ornamental, but some medicinal uses were developed. By 1716, an English patent was granted for squeezing oil from the sunflower seed. The oil is light yellow in color, light in density and leaves very little oily residue.
Sunflower Oil has been used as an ingredient in cosmetic products for years. It is an extremely versatile oil that can be used in massage and many natural body care applications. Sunflower Oil naturally contains more Vitamin E than any other vegetable oil and therefore is an excellent moisturizer for skin. It can be used as an emollient to help the skin retain moisture, preventing excessive dryness, is easily absorbed and tolerated by all skin types.
