Spruce essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the needles and twigs of the spruce tree. This is a large evergreen tree that grows to over 150 feet tall. It produces small brown cones and has an estimated life span of 1200 years. It is mostly cultivated in the USA and Canada. The essential oil is colorless to pale yellow.
American Indians heated spruce twigs in steam baths to induce sweating for relief of colds and coughs. Spruce brings to mind the pleasant aroma of a Christmas tree filling the house. It is brightening and uplifting as well as grounding at the same time.
Spruce essential oil is used by Aromatherapists in warming massage blends for muscular pain and poor circulation. It is not generally used for natural skincare applications such as creams and lotions although it is antiseptic, antimicrobial and astringent.
Note: as with any essential oil, always test a small amount first for sensitivity or allergic reaction.
