Peppermint oil is one of the world’s oldest medicinal herbs. It was used by many ancient cultures including the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese and Native American Indians.
The Peppermint plant is cultivated globally. It is a summer-growing perennial with upright square stems. Peppermint essential oil is a pale yellow oil extracted by steam distillation from the flowering herb.
The main constituent of Peppermint is menthol which produces a sensation of coolness. The body then reacts to this coolness by producing its own warming effect. The aroma of Peppermint essential oil is strengthening, soothing and stimulating and is best used during the day (rather than just before bedtime).
For centuries, Peppermint has brought a cooling relief from exhaustion. Its key ingredient “menthol” magically refreshes and relaxes with its simultaneous cooling and warming sensations.
Peppermint has a variety of benefits for the mind and body.
- For the body, it is cooling, relieves pain, reduces inflammation, helps breathing, soothes itchy skin, and much more.
- For the mind, it can be uplifting, improve clarity, sharpen the senses and is energizing and reviving.
- Peppermint has analgesic, antiseptic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, astringent, decongestant, and stimulant properties.
Aromatherapists consider peppermint oil to be one of the more indispensable essential oils. It is included in many invigorating massage oil blends to improve blood flow and awaken the mind. Aromatherapists also love Peppermint’s ability to enliven and sharpen the senses resulting in improved mental clarity.
Peppermint is particularly good for foot care. Dancers and many sports professionals put an incredible amount of pressure on the 26 bones in each foot. Feet that are well cared for can withstand this extensive pounding and pressure. Soaking feet in warm water with Bath Crystals infused with peppermint is a great treat for your feet. Apply a Peppermint Eucalyptus foot balm or a Tee Tree Peppermint cream afterwards to moisturize.
Chapped cracked lips benefit greatly from a lip balm infused with Peppermint oil as do cracked cuticles with a Tea Tree Peppermint cuticle crème.
Peppermint has a clear, penetrating mint fragrance that is bright and fresh with herbaceous warm undertones. It is very fresh and clean smelling.
