^ TopHistory & Origins of Lavender

Lavender is native to the western half of the MediterraneanLavender is an herb that comes from a short evergreen woody shrub with pale green narrow leaves and violet blue flowers. Lavender essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of these flowers.

Lavender is native to the western half of the Mediterranean. Some say it was the Romans and the Benedictine monks who introduced Lavender to the rest of Europe. Today the herb is cultivated worldwide although it is best living in a dry climate at high altitudes. The essential oil is produced mainly in France.

The story of modern day aromatherapy probably started with Lavender.  In 1910 a French chemist named Rene-Maurice Gattefosse personally experienced first-hand the amazing healing properties of Lavender.  He was in a terrible lab accident which badly burned his hands.  He rinsed his hands in Lavender essence and the resulting astonishing speed with which the wounds on his hands healed led Dr. Gattefosse to write the first book of Aromatherapy in 1937.  Dr. Gattefosse actually coined the term “aromatherapy” which we still use today for the herbalist practices of this ancient art.
