The coconut is a fruit with a long and respected history. Its oil has been used for thousands of years in cultures around the globe. Early Spanish explorers called it coco, which means "monkey face" because the three indentations (eyes) on the hairy nut resemble the head and face of a monkey.
Coconut oil comes from Copra, which is dried coconut meat. It is a solid, white-colored light-weight oil. This oil is a naturally saturated fat which means that it is solid at room temperature. While once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content; its reputation has been “healed” since its’ anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties have been discovered. Today about 25% of all cosmetic ingredients are coconut oil derived due to its long, stable molecular structure as well as its easy, inexpensive availability.
Wherever the coconut palm grows people have learned of its importance as an effective medicine. For thousands of years coconut products have held a respected and valuable place in local folk medicine. Known not only for its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, Coconut oil is an amazing moisturizer. It creates a protective layer on the skin retaining the moisture within the skin. It is also the preferred oil for making high quality cold process soaps because it lathers easily and cleans very well.
Coconut oil is excellent for massage and for conditioning the skin during massage. Of all oils it is the least likely to go rancid or stain linens. It is also an excellent conditioner for hair and lips. The fat in the oil helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles without any irritation. Coconut oil can also help with skin problems like psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin conditions.
