Cocoa butter starts with the cocoa tree, which originates in the upper Amazon basin. In the wild, it grows to 50 feet tall as an "understory" tree in the shade of towering 200-foot-tall hardwoods and other trees. Cocoa trees are a member of the evergreen family and in the right conditions can produce fruit for between 75-100 years. The pods or fruit of the tree produce cocoa beans. It is common legend that the cocoa bean was a sacred gift from the Mayan and Aztec Gods. Cocoa beans were also the currency of the age in Mayan civilization.
Cocoa Butter is a derivative of cocoa beans and results from a press of the cocoa beans which separates the cocoa butter from the cocoa solids. Cocoa Butter is one of the most stable fats known but has a relatively low melting point just below the human body temperature. This is why cocoa products melt easily on or in the human body.
Cocoa butter contains natural antioxidants that prevent rancidity and is an excellent moisturizer that leaves skin feeling soft and silky smooth. It is known to reduce dryness and improve skin flexibility.
Cocoa butter can be found as an additive in many cosmetics, shampoos and soaps. It is also a natural emollient making it ideal for lotions and lip balms. The moisturizing abilities of cocoa butter are frequently recommended for prevention of stretch marks in pregnant women, treatment of chapped skin and lips, and as a daily moisturizer to prevent dry, itchy skin. Further benefits of cocoa butter include its ability to naturally preserve and its faintly pleasant aroma which adds to it benefits in the cosmetics field.
Though many believe that cocoa butter has the ability to reduce or diminish the appearance of scars, this is a theory that is yet unproven. It does however, promote elasticity in the skin and will aid in the healing of chapped skin if it is used regularly.
